Singapore might be compact, but choosing the right area can make a big difference to the experience your clients have.

One traveller might want to wake up to the unmistakable skyline of Marina Bay, while another would rather have Orchard Road’s shopping on the doorstep. Some will love the heritage and food of Chinatown, while others might be happier among the colourful streets of Kampong Glam or beside the restaurants and nightlife of the Singapore River.

And then there’s Sentosa – where Singapore swaps skyscrapers for beaches, attractions and a completely different pace.

For travel agents, understanding these differences can make it much easier to match clients with the right base. Here are six areas to consider – and a hotel to put on your radar in each.

Marina Bay: For iconic Singapore

If clients are visiting Singapore for the first time and want to be surrounded by some of its most recognisable sights, Marina Bay is hard to beat.

This is the Singapore of futuristic architecture, glittering skylines and waterfront views. Gardens by the Bay, the ArtScience Museum and the waterfront are all part of the experience, while the area looks particularly spectacular once the city lights come on.

5* Marina Bay Sands Singapore

Few hotels are as closely associated with their destination as Marina Bay Sands.

Its three towers and spectacular rooftop have become part of Singapore’s skyline, making a stay here an experience in itself. The famous SkyPark Infinity Pool sits 57 storeys above the city and is exclusively available to hotel guests, providing one of Singapore’s most memorable viewpoints.

Beyond the rooms, clients have an extraordinary amount at their fingertips, with restaurants, shopping, entertainment and attractions all forming part of the wider Marina Bay Sands complex.

For clients who have always pictured themselves swimming above the Singapore skyline, this is one hotel where the accommodation can become part of the reason for making the trip.

Orchard Road: For shopping and city-centre convenience

For clients who consider shopping an essential part of a city break, Orchard Road needs little introduction.

The famous boulevard is lined with shopping centres, designer boutiques, department stores, restaurants and entertainment, making it an exceptionally convenient base for travellers who want plenty within easy reach. It’s also well connected for exploring the rest of Singapore.

5* Four Seasons Hotel Singapore

Tucked just off the main shopping belt on tree-lined Orchard Boulevard, Four Seasons Hotel Singapore offers a calmer counterpoint to the energy outside.

The hotel has 259 rooms and suites, pools, a 24-hour fitness centre and six dining venues, while Orchard Road’s shopping and entertainment are just steps away. The Singapore Botanic Gardens are also nearby, giving clients an easy change of scenery when they’ve had their fill of the shops.

It’s a particularly strong choice for clients who want a central location but don’t necessarily want their hotel itself to feel hectic.

Chinatown & Duxton: For heritage with a contemporary edge

For travellers who like their city breaks to come with plenty of character, the Chinatown and Duxton area offers something very different from Marina Bay.

Historic shophouses provide reminders of Singapore’s past, while temples, cafés, restaurants, bars and shops create an area that rewards exploring on foot. Chinatown itself was the original settlement of Singapore’s Chinese community and remains one of the city’s designated historic districts.

Head towards Duxton Hill and that heritage backdrop meets a distinctly contemporary dining and lifestyle scene.

5* Mondrian Singapore Duxton

Sitting in the heart of Duxton Hill, Mondrian Singapore Duxton reflects the neighbourhood particularly well.

The design-led hotel has 302 rooms and suites inspired by traditional Singaporean architecture, alongside contemporary art and striking interiors. Its location places guests right amongst one of the city’s most interesting areas, while the rooftop pool provides a very different perspective over Singapore.

It’s a hotel that feels connected to the neighbourhood around it rather than removed from it.

Kampong Glam & Bugis: For colour, culture and independent finds

Clients who like neighbourhoods with personality should also consider the Bugis and Kampong Glam area.

Kampong Glam is one of Singapore’s historic districts, where traditional shophouses sit alongside independent boutiques, cafés and restaurants. Nearby Bugis adds shopping and excellent transport connections, making the wider area a particularly useful base for sightseeing.

It’s lively, colourful and a great choice for clients who want to see a side of Singapore beyond its skyscrapers.

4* Village Hotel Bugis

Village Hotel Bugis provides a convenient base close to both Kampong Glam and Bugis.

Its location works particularly well for travellers who want to head out on foot and discover the surrounding streets, from the colourful shops and cafés around Arab Street and Haji Lane to the broader shopping and dining options around Bugis.

Rather than making the hotel the entire focus of the stay, this is a recommendation for clients who want to get out, explore and have an accessible base to return to afterwards.

Singapore River & Clarke Quay: For dining, nightlife and evenings by the water

Singapore changes character again around its historic river.

Clarke Quay and the surrounding riverside areas combine heritage architecture with restaurants, bars and entertainment, making this a particularly good option for travellers who like to be able to head out for dinner or drinks without travelling far from their hotel.

Nearby Boat Quay was historically at the centre of Singapore’s trading activity; today, its former shophouses and warehouses are predominantly home to restaurants, shops and other businesses.

4* Park Regis by Prince Singapore

Park Regis by Prince Singapore sits on Merchant Road, giving clients a convenient base close to Clarke Quay and the Singapore River.

Its position means guests can combine daytime sightseeing with easy access to the area’s restaurants and evening atmosphere, while the city’s wider attractions remain within reach.

It’s a useful choice for travellers who plan to spend plenty of time exploring and appreciate having dining, entertainment and transport options close by.

Sentosa: For beaches, attractions and a different side of Singapore

And finally, there’s Sentosa.

While the other five areas provide different versions of the city experience, Sentosa offers the chance to leave much of that behind. Beaches, family attractions and resort hotels give the island a distinctly holiday-like atmosphere.

4* Village Hotel Sentosa

Village Hotel Sentosa offers an easy-going resort base on the island, particularly for clients who want to spend more than a single day exploring Sentosa.

The location puts guests close to the island’s attractions while giving them a very different experience from staying among Singapore’s high-rise city hotels.

For agents, Sentosa is also worth considering for clients who don’t necessarily see themselves as “city-break people”. Combining Singapore’s sightseeing with a few slower-paced days here can change the feel of the entire trip.

One city, six very different stays

That’s one of Singapore’s great strengths: clients can tailor the experience simply by changing where they base themselves.

Choose Marina Bay for skyline views and big-name sights, Orchard Road for shopping, Chinatown and Duxton for heritage and contemporary dining, or Kampong Glam and Bugis for colourful streets and local character.

Around Clarke Quay and the Singapore River, evenings take centre stage, while Sentosa offers beaches and resort-style downtime just beyond the city.

And clients don’t necessarily have to choose just one.

For longer stays, combining a few nights in the heart of Singapore with time on Sentosa can work particularly well – giving travellers the buzz of a city break and the chance to slow things down before heading home.

The key is to look beyond simply finding a hotel and ask what your client wants from Singapore. Once you know that, choosing the right part of the city becomes much easier.
