Winter can be a brilliant time to rediscover the classic city break.

Once the festive rush has passed, many European cities settle into a quieter rhythm, with fewer crowds and opportunities to make the holiday budget go further than during peak travel periods. And great value doesn’t necessarily mean choosing the cheapest option. It could mean upgrading to a five-star stay, choosing a hotel in a location that makes exploring easier, or simply having more left in the budget for dining, sightseeing and experiences.

From thermal baths in Budapest and historic streets in Kraków to riverside dining in Porto and milder days in Valencia, here are six cities worth recommending this winter – along with some Stuba hotel suggestions for their stay.

Kraków, Poland

Beautiful, compact and packed with history, Kraków is a natural choice for clients looking to get plenty from their city-break budget.

The magnificent Main Market Square sits at the heart of the Old Town, surrounded by colourful façades, cafés and historic landmarks. Clients can explore Wawel Royal Castle, wander the cobbled streets or head into Kazimierz, the former Jewish quarter that’s now one of the city’s liveliest areas for restaurants and bars.

Winter suits Kraków particularly well. Crisp days add to the atmosphere, while hearty Polish favourites such as pierogi provide the perfect excuse to escape the cold.

5* Sheraton Grand Krakow

For clients looking to make their city-break budget go a little further, Sheraton Grand Krakow shows that great value can also mean upgrading the experience. This five-star stay sits on the banks of the Vistula River, at the foot of Wawel Royal Castle and within easy reach of Kraków’s historic centre. After a winter’s day exploring, guests can retreat to the hotel’s indoor pool, sauna and wellness facilities – adding a touch of luxury to a short city escape.

Budapest, Hungary

Budapest packs an impressive amount into one city break.

On one side of the Danube, Buda is home to Castle Hill, Fisherman’s Bastion and fantastic viewpoints. Across the river, Pest brings grand architecture, restaurants, cafés, nightlife and many of the Hungarian capital’s best-known attractions.

But one of Budapest’s biggest winter selling points has to be its thermal baths. There’s something particularly memorable about sinking into a steaming pool when temperatures outside have dropped.

Add hearty Hungarian food, atmospheric ruin bars, museums and beautiful evening views along the Danube and there’s plenty to fill a long weekend.

4* Emerald Hotel

Emerald Hotel is a stylish four-star boutique stay in the heart of Budapest, with contemporary rooms and suites designed for relaxing after a day in the city. Guests can warm up in the Finnish sauna, make use of the fitness room or unwind over drinks at Secco Café & Bar. For a little extra space, the suites come with their own kitchenettes, while the hotel’s central location puts the sights, shops and restaurants of Budapest close at hand.

Prague, Czech Republic

Gothic towers, cobbled streets, historic squares and colourful architecture give Prague its unmistakable fairy-tale appearance – and winter only adds to the atmosphere.

Many of the headline attractions are close enough together to make exploring on foot easy. Clients can cross Charles Bridge, visit Prague Castle, see the Astronomical Clock in Old Town Square and stop off at traditional pubs and cosy cafés along the way.

Visiting outside the busiest periods can also give travellers a little more space to appreciate one of Europe’s most popular city-break destinations.

4* The Julius Prague

For clients looking for something a little more special, The Julius Prague offers stylish, contemporary accommodation in the heart of the city. Its spacious rooms and residences combine modern design with home-from-home comforts, while its central location puts many of Prague’s best-known sights within easy reach. It’s a great choice for clients who want a little more space and comfort from their winter city break.

Porto, Portugal

Winter value doesn’t have to mean freezing temperatures and snow-covered streets.

Porto offers a milder alternative, bringing together colourful neighbourhoods, impressive architecture, excellent food and beautiful views across the Douro.

Clients can wander through the historic Ribeira district, cross the Dom Luís I Bridge, visit the famous port lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia or settle into one of the city’s restaurants for a leisurely lunch.

The weather can be changeable during winter, but in a destination where lingering over good food and heading inside for a port tasting are part of the experience, that can easily become part of Porto’s charm.

4* YOTEL Porto

YOTEL Porto brings a smart, modern feel to a city break, with contemporary rooms featuring adjustable SmartBeds, rain showers and clever technology designed to make stays easy and comfortable. Guests can grab a drink or bite to eat at Komyuniti, work out in the 24-hour gym or simply recharge before another day exploring Porto. With Trindade metro station nearby, getting around the city is easy too.

Valencia, Spain

For clients who would happily swap scarves and snow for blue skies and milder temperatures, Valencia is well worth considering.

Spain’s third-largest city combines history, culture, food, green spaces and coastline, giving visitors plenty of variety over a few days.

Clients can explore the old town, discover the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences, cycle through the Turia Gardens or head towards the beach. And as the birthplace of paella, it’s an obvious recommendation for anyone who likes their city breaks to revolve around food.

Winter’s gentler temperatures can also make exploring on foot or by bike particularly enjoyable.

4* ESTIMAR Valencia

Set in a former bank headquarters in the heart of the city, ESTIMAR Valencia combines contemporary design with plenty of character. Guests can enjoy stylish rooms, local flavours at The Place of Bankers restaurant, wellness treatments and a fitness area, while The Coin Rooftop offers drinks alongside views across Valencia’s rooftops. And with Plaza del Ayuntamiento just a short walk away, it’s a great base for making the most of a few days in the city.

Sofia, Bulgaria

For clients who have already ticked off many of Europe’s classic city-break favourites, Sofia offers something a little different – and can be a great option when value is high on the wish list.

Bulgaria’s capital combines grand boulevards, Orthodox churches, Roman remains and museums with a lively café and restaurant scene, all against the impressive backdrop of Vitosha Mountain.

The magnificent Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is the obvious headline sight, but Sofia’s appeal also lies in uncovering the different periods of history that have shaped the city.

4* Rosslyn Thracia Hotel Sofia

Rosslyn Thracia Hotel Sofia combines a central setting with spacious, contemporary accommodation, giving guests a comfortable place to retreat after a winter’s day exploring. Rooms feature modern interiors and thoughtful touches, while a generous breakfast provides a good start before heading out into the city. Its location just off Vitosha Boulevard also means some of Sofia’s best-known sights, shops and restaurants are within easy walking distance.

A winter break worth recommending

From culture-packed Kraków and spa-loving Budapest to the milder streets of Porto and Valencia, these destinations give agents plenty of ways to match a winter escape to different clients and budgets.

For some, that might mean discovering a city where dining and sightseeing leave more room in the spending budget. For others, it could be staying somewhere more central, choosing a hotel with a little extra comfort or even turning a short break into a five-star escape.
